Our Math Royalty This Week

Congratulations to Queen Kendra, Prince Ethan, and Duke Dakota!

My Monarchs seemed to really enjoy their 1000- Hour Reading Celebration Day today.  They were awesome and READ AND READ AND READ!  The superintendent happened to stop by and caught us with our noses in great books.  (I think she was a little jealous. )

Only homework tonight is that pesky spelling practice test.

Hope to see everyone in a couple of hours for our evening Christmas Program.  Our Santa Workshop will be open before and after the program.  Thank you to those who volunteered to help us this year.

There shouldn't be any homework tonight since we only did a one-sided, 10 problem page in math today.  I think most finished during class today.

Hopefully, we can mail our Great Mail Race letters tomorrow.  We are sending to all 50 states and hope that we will hear from them in return.

Our state reports are also due tomorrow.  If they aren't finished, they will need to be done next week during free times.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone enjoyed our pancakes this morning.  I sent a recipe that you can make very easily at home.

If your child gets bored, don't forget they have an ixl.com account that is really good.  We are just beginning to find equivalent fractions, reduce, and simplify.  I think that is M4.   We have also been working on B7, K2, Y1, Y2, and Y3.  If you haven't checked it out, maybe this weekend will be the time to take a look.

Hope reading a good book sounds like a fun, relaxing way to spend some of your vacation time.

Getting too easy in my old age....only homework is our reading at least 20 minutes and the math spiral if it didn't get finished in class.  Don't forget that ixl.com is a GREAT way to practice the specific skills we are working on in class.  Each student now has a username and password of their own, so they can practice at home anytime.

I will try to give everyone their scootpad username tomorrow.  It has practice for reading and math skills we can do in class or at home.  Acuityathome.com is another great resouce to get ready for ISTEP in the spring.

Have a great evening together.

Our iPad is Up and Running!

Finally!  My new iPad is up and going.  I have downloaded Splash Math and Scoot Pad so far.  If you know of other apps, please pass that on to me and I'll see what I can do.  I'm sure the kids will help me get comfortable with the programs.

Tonight (I think most were finished with just about everything but the spelling workbook.  Hope so.)
  •  spelling workbook
  • math sheet if not finished
  • Weekly Reader if not finished
  • Social Studies sheet if not finished
We have started a countdown to Thanksgiving on 10 things we're thankful for...but the object is to be very specific, narrow it down to something only you could say because it includes details of your family or life.  For example, one student had written she was thankful for her family and how they do things together.  We suggested saying, "I'm thankful that ____, ____________, _____________,  and I get to go to movies like Spiderman together."

We're trying to add one each day.

We're ready for Texas tomorrow on our states and capitals unit.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

True Story of Three Pigs Entertains the Monarchs

Wow!  Two-hour delay and a field trip all in one day!  I was proud of our Monarchs.  I thought they behaved very well out in the big world.

We did manage to squeeze in our math spiral and a reading vocabulary sheet.  I collected everyone's reading to be finished tomorrow if needed.  I also have most of the students' math to look at tonight.  A few wanted to take them home to have them checked.  As I was going around checking, I noticed several who needed to be asking questions on problems they were struggling with.  Please encourage your child to ask when they have the opportunity to get help.  I look at these papers as practice papers, so I will help with anything I can.  Hopefully, your child will be ready for the math quiz tomorrow.

We are also reviewing simple, compound, and complex sentences.  Several are still having a hard time identifying these.  If you can, please check with your child to see if they need some extra help at home.

Monarchs Make Cinnamon Rolls for Veterans

Grr... wish I would have taken pictures of the kids making their rolls today.  They did a great job.  We'll  be able to try them on Friday.  We had to freeze them today because of time.

Another easy night for homework.  Only reading 20 minutes and the spiral math if it wasn't finished.

PLEASE WEAR YOUR MONARCH SHIRT TOMORROW FOR THE FIELD TRIP.

I'll be passing out pictures tomorrow.  Today was soooooo busy that I didn't even get to my mailbox.

Enjoy your evening.

CCE Elects Romney

The 6th grade had a great mock-trial today for all of the students.  Romney won by a landslide.  We'll see how the rest of the country compares to Mayberry.

I  have a survey I'd love for you to "complete."  I've been pondering the best way to cover our math standards.
  •  I love the new spiral because of all the early practice it gives the kids before ISTEP.
  •  I liked the extra computation practice they got from Saxon.
  •  I LOVE IXL for practicing specific skills.(your child has a new password they can use at home as well as at school.  GREAT resource!)
  •   I think specific skill sheets are extremely helpful.  ..
  • I love the repetition they get from doing Calendar.
.How to do it all is the problem.  This week I have been trying more whole group instruction (using protractors, pretzels, and marshmallows) combined with only spiral, IXL on the computer, and today a skill sheet practicing measuring angles.
As a parent, I would appreciate hearing your opinion.  Do you LOVE not having math homework?  Do you think your child will get enough practice without it?  What do you think of only having Saxon on Monday or Thursday and doing portions of Calendar together each day?
One problem with homework besides the time it takes at home obviously, is that some students don't have the luxury of having someone working with them and a result is that they "practice" the wrong way.  For others, without a strong supporter at home, simply don't do it.  So, ...if you have time, I'd love hearing your two cents worth.

Tomorrow we will be making cinnamon rolls in the art room at 11:30.  We'll hopefully be able to eat ours tomorrow, but the others we'll be freezing for the staff and the veterans on Monday.  I have some helpers coming tomorrow, but you are welcome as well if you have the desire and time.

Don't forget tomorrow is our spelling test as well as workbook pages.
I think almost everyone completed their math spiral and the skill page (and some have even had them checked)  One thing I noticed was that several had not followed directions on how to create a specific size of angle.  (We drew the vertex and horizontal line, found the degree of angle being asked for, added a dot in that spot, lifted the protractor, and connected the vertex dot to the degree dot.  Finally, add arrows.)

Thanks for helping with our annual food drive.  We appreciate your generosity.

Congratulations, Dakota!

Persuasive Paragraph due tomorrow:  I think most are finished with this in class, but a review of what the assignment looks like is this.
  1. top bun:  opening sentence that states what your child is trying to persuade me to do (Mrs, Mitchell, I think .....)
  2. first reason:  beginning with a transition, state the first reason you give for me doing what you are requesting (First of all, .....)
  3. second reason:  ( Secondly, ....   or Next, ...)
  4. third reason:  ( Finally, ....   or,  In conclusion, ......)
  5. bottom bun:  restate your persuading statement (For these reasons,  I think....)

No Saxon homework tonight. Spiral math/ calendar  (please look over both of these sides to see that you agree with your child's answers.  We went over several of the correct answers, but that doesn't always mean everyone was focused.)

Energy Kits Coming Home

There is a short questionaire I'd appreciate you filling out tonight on page 2-3 in the green student activity book sent home with the kits today.  IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DO ANY OR ALL OF THE EXPERIMENTS ON THE FOLLOWING HOME ACTIVITIES PAGES, I WOULD SOOOOOO APPRECIATE IT!  Please just write me a note in your child's agenda if you think it's something you would be able to do for us.  Enjoy the kits.  We'll be discussing all the items gradually in class and how they can help you save money at home.

Today we did a Weekly Reader page using our text feature scavenger hunt page.  The students were supposed to go ahead and give those to me today so that I could check how well they were able to navigate their nonfiction reading sheets.

Coming home are the two math tests we took on Friday.  We did not have time to correct those in class.  If your child does correct his test, I would love to give them a small reward tomorrow.  Tonight's homework includes the practice section on multiplying decimals.  They can find that page using their index if they did not write it down as I asked them to do.  There is also a spiral sheet and the calendar from our last Monday on the back.  (We were at the courthouse that day.)

Don't forget tonight is the practice spelling test night.  Please give  the test and ask your child to write any missed words 2X each on the same page.  I would appreciate a signature as well.

Our fall party will be tomorrow and Wednesday.  If you would like to send in any drinks or snacks, that would be great.

Monarchs March to the Courthouse

I was very proud of my monarchs today at the March to the Courthouse.  I was happy to see so many good listeners at each session.

Don't forget the pesky practice spelling test tonight.

I have Jell-O jigglers to give to the kids tomorrow for doing such a good job during the first quarter of the reading super bowl.  Please try to encourage reading at least 20 minutes with thick and thin questions.  For those struggling with comprehension, if they can learn to question while they read, it helps them remember what they are reading.  Thick questions are just a little deeper thinking than the lower level thin questions, so experts push giving readers more opportunities to practice that skill.

Tomorrow is purple and white day to celebrate the high school's volleyball sectional win.  We'll be going over for the pep session at 2:40 tomorrow.

Friday, October 19, 2012

Don't Forget Monarch Shirts Monday

If possible, please wear your monarch shirt on Monday.  If you need to wear warmer clothes underneath to keep warm, could you try that rather than covering your shirt up with a coat?? Just be watching the weather to see the best way to dress.  We will be outside for most of the day.

Please talk to your child about the importance of outstanding behavior as well.  The other classes will be noticing us - either for the good or ....not so good.  There will also be people from the community inside the courthouse voting early, so it's critical that we show off our best monarch behavior.

Report cards are coming home today.  Hope your child is off to a good start on this quarter's Power School report card.  It really is a great tool for you to see your child's progress day to day.  They should be bringing home their graded papers for you to see in their purple slick folders.  We discuss this almost every day.

Congratulations to our Math Royalty:  Queen Kendra, Prince Ethan R., and Duke AJ...and their perfect trusted advisors...Hope you enjoy a great weekend.  See you Monday morning!

Totally Terrific Tribes Today!

I was so happy with how our tribe members performed today.  We kept on task throughout the day, worked hard in our groups, and followed rule #5 by "making their dear teacher happy." I need to take some pictures to show off my prize-winning groups' feathers.  Congratulations to my Iroquois and Cheyenne tribes.  Hopefully, my Hopi will be celebrating very soon!

Today:  spelling test (please look over sentences and parts of speech to see if you need some extra help at home before the next test.)
reading comprehension sheet
social studies lesson 5 sheet
Hopi quiz
skelton math sheet
spiral math/calendar

Do you feel like your little Indian is catching on to this CHALLENGING math better?  We start a new quarter on Monday with the empasis being on geometry and fractions.  I still think by ISTEP we'll be ready.  Thank you for checking over their work when needed and all your extra support.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Today:
Our Hopi test was postponed until tomorrow.  Please make sure your child has a good understanding of where each of our tribes call home and how they adapted to their environment for their homes and food.
They voted to have the state test on Friday.  This test will focus on locating our states through Maryland and knowing their capitals.

Reading:  Everyone should have an agreed upon section in their book to read for tomorrow.  We had several who had not written down their thick and thin questions for their group today.  We are counting this as a daily reading grade.

Spelling workbook is due tomorrow as well as the test.  If your child struggles with kinds of sentences, punctuating, or parts of speech, could you review with them before tomorrow?

Math:  Saxon #29 (6-15), spiral sheet, calendar/ some have time fact sheets to do before tomorrow/ some have a blue note asking for help at home in mastering some of our skills such as rounding, ordering, converting fractions to decimals, or naming decimals.

Don't forget picture day is Thursday.

Monday, October 8, 2012

Today:
Reading Book Clubs started- this means that your child is a member of a group of students all reading the same book. (All the books are connected to our Native American social studies unit.)  They will spend about 15 minutes each day reading their book at school and another 10 minutes discussing the "thick and thin" questions they have written in their composition books.  There should be a paper with examples of each in their composition book for you to see.  They are to write one thick question and answer it, and then write 2 thin questions and answer them.  This is in place of their reading summaries each evening.  They do not have to do double duty. They may still add whatever additional minutes with pure enjoyment reading to their score for you to sign.  If all this is very confusing, please ask me to clarify.
The questions and answers each evening are important because they will be used in the group the next day for discussion.  I hope that everyone is able to enjoy their book and have great discussions within their group.

Don't forget Monday's are always practice spelling test night.  Please correct 2X and have parent signature on the paper.

Math:  spiral workbook for Monday, calendar math, and Saxon #28 (6-15).  The three focus problems in the first box are 1/4=  1/5=  and 0.3=

Please look over the math tests, ESPECIALLY the rounding, ordering, naming, and converting test.  These are major skills that must be mastered.  Hopefully, I will not need to use recess time to make sure everyone has got it.

Finally, if your child has not mastered their math facts, please be sure they are working on them nightly with the sheet I give them.  I would encourage you to have them be able to say the first row without too much trouble to you.  When they struggle with one, help them, and then go back to the beginning of the row again.  It helps the brain remember the facts to keep going back that way.

States were chosen today for our research paper.  I gave them a template to match for their state.  We will be using our atlas and school state books from the library for research sources.  Tomorrow, we will learn how to write our bibliographies to give credit to those sources.  These papers won't be due for a few weeks, but everyone should start looking for their facts.

We had our first Native American village come today.  IT WAS AWESOME!  I will try to take a picture tomorrow so that you can see it.  Hope everyone can get theirs finished by Friday's due date.

Whew!  Is that enough for one day??  Thanks again for checking the blog to help your kids stay on track.  In fact, if you read this tonight, please ask your child to write me one complex sentence (they should know what that is...) about a Native American tribe....and I will reward them with some bonus $$ tomorrow.

Friday, October 5, 2012

May I just say a HUGE THANK YOU for all your help at home.  It makes my job so much easier and enjoyable when we work together to see that skills are getting mastered.  I will be grading and handing back math mastery quizzes on Monday.  I will be pulling students back for this, but please check on Monday night to see how your child is doing.  We have worked so hard on some of these skills, but several still struggle.

Mrs. Mitchell's Tribes

The students all have their regional Native American tribe assigned to them.  They will be using shoe boxes to display their villages.  They will need to show what they ate, what kind of house they lived in, and also the environment for the region.  They will have a couple of weeks to work on this.  Can't wait to see them and display them out in the hallway.

If your child didn't complete their lesson 3 Social Studies sheet today, they will need to finish that for Monday.

We took our math acuity test today.  You might want to ask your child what their score out of 30 was.  We are working SOOOOOOOOOOOO hard to master our math skills.  I am confident that by the time we take our test, we will be where we want to be.  Please hang in there with us and keep going over the CHALLENGING homework/calendar math, the computation practice in Saxon, and those pesky multiplication facts.

Coming Soon:  Native American Shoebox Village
We will become experts in the Northwestern Tlingit tribe, the Northeastern Woodlands Iroquois, the Southwest Hopi tribe, and the Plains Cheyenne.  Our shoeboxes will depict a typical village in each of the regions.  I will be assigning which region your child will be creating.  If some students want to work together, they may, but I will be limited as to how much in class time they will have to put it together.  They would need to either go to each others' houses, or use their recess time at school.  I will see if we can assign those tribes tomorrow to give you extra time to work on it.  I am hoping to have the exhibit finished two weeks from tomorrow for our hallway.
