Monarch Perform Human Timeline with Perfection

I will be getting pictures to you from our Human Timeline today.  The News also came to take pictures of everyone.  If I can figure out how to post it, we also videotaped the kids talking to the museum visitors.  Thank you for your help with costumes.

Tomorrow is field day.

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Lauryn and Addy babysit one of our class chicks.  The chicks make for a very exciting week.

Tomorrow is our official dress rehearsal for our Human Timeline.  Please listen to your child's script to see that they have it memorized, have good eye contact, and a nice, strong voice.

Chicks Take A Trip

Big thank you to Lucy Sinders for babysitting our eggs this morning.  We were without power beginning about 7:00 this morning.  I took our 6 incubators to get warm at Lucy's.  Then Lucy lost power so Stacy came and took them to her house until power came back on at school.  Crazy morning!  THANK YOU to STACY and LUCY!!  Hopefully, with all their help, all the chicks will be well next week when it is time to hatch on Tuesday.

The lack of power delayed taking our last ISTEP until tomorrow at 10:15.

I will be sending home bus lists and itinerary for our trip tomorrow.

Practice parts for Human Timeline.

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Ahh....Only One Test to Go

We will test first thing tomorrow morning for our final social studies test.  Make-ups will be Thursday.

Our hour of reading needs to be turned in tomorrow.

Please continue asking your child to recite SLOWLY their part in our human timeline.  Their eyes need to slowly scan the crowd just as the statues at museums do.  I'd like to have a dress rehearsal this Thursday, so we can see what we still need.

Don't forget to get our monarch t-shirts clean and ready for Friday.

Monday, May 6, 2013

Only Social Studies ISTEP Left

We completed our Reading/Language Arts ISTEP at the end of the day.  Tomorrow we will test at 10:10 for our Social Studies.

Friday, May 3, 2013

Please ask your child to practice their human timeline script over the weekend.  I would like for them to be memorized by Monday.  Also, please write on their script card what their outfit is going to look like.  We plan to perform this on Thursday, the 16th.  We will  be scheduling between  9:00-11:00 for all the classrooms.

Have a great weekend!

MATH ISTEP COMPLETED

Tomorrow we will be taking our first Reading/Language Arts ISTEP at 12:20.

We still have several students who have not written down their 2-3 sentence speech for the human timeline.  Please ask your child to tell them their part tonight to see how it sounds.  We need to be working on getting their outfit completed too.  If you need help in finding something, please let me know.

I am hoping that everyone is ready to begin their hardback memory book by the first of next week.  That means that they have turned in their rough copies of  at least 9 paragraph memories.  The last three chapters MAY wait until after the chicks hatch, we've gone to St. Louis, and have performed the human timeline.  Parts of those memories can be finished before, but some details can follow after the actual experience.  Each of these paragraphs are earning points for the language grade, so they are important to do your best writing before I check them.

Need all permission slips tomorrow so that I can give the cafeteria an accurate count for St. Louis suppers.
I also need signed midterm grades returned tomorrow.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Yippee! First Test Accomplished!

We worked hard on our first math ISTEP test this morning.  The problems were what we were expecting....so hopefully,....we did well.  Tomorrow we should be taking our second math test.

Our third paragraph entry for 5th grade memories should be turned in by tomorrow morning.  Please look over each entry before it is turned in.  (I am taking points for each one.)  After 12 entries, we will begin our official hardcopy bare book.

Our RTI groups are reading a book together.  They may need to read some each evening to finish the chapter for the day.  This time can count for their Reading Super Bowl.

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

More Computer Problems...No ISTEP Today

We will try again tomorrow to take our first math ISTEP.  I think we will be taking it early in the day.

Tonight:  write 2-3 sentences introducing yourself and why you are famous for our Human Timeline.  That will need to be on Thursday, the 16th, in the morning before Award's Day in the afternoon.

Have second memory book paragraph written and approved by tomorrow.

READING HOUR DUE TOMORROW.

Computers Crash - No ISTEP Today

Well, after reviewing like CRAZY, we weren't able to take our session one in math.  Our corporation had issues everywhere with computers crashing - even throughout the state.  We will be testing tomorrow at 2:05 ...yuck....  to do our first math session.

Could you give your child a sample fraction with unlike denominators question tonight to see how they do?  Also, we reviewed converting metric measurements such as 200 centimeters = __meters.  There are excellent review problems  in ixl for this.  Please review M6 and W4 if you see a problem.  Again, any review on ixl is so perfect because they explain any missed answers and give repeated questions to practice.

Tonight, please look over your child's first paragraph for their fifth grade memory book.  Each paragraph will be graded before rewriting in their hardcover white bare books.  Each entry will also include an illustration.  I just need a rough sketch of what that will look like.  After checking, please sign saying you okay the work.  Everyone should have a brainstormed list of suggestions.  a few students still need to turn in social studies lesson 5 sheet.  I called the names today, so they know who they are.  I am also missing several Bud, Not Buddy 12-13 sheets.  I have two that haven't turned in their president research pamphlet.

MIDTERMS went home today.  We will be doing more spelling review sheets in class.   We will also hit science and health after ISTEP so that we have a grade before the end of the period.

I need to receive a note saying that you were able to create some kind of outfit for our human timeline coming the last week of school.  I got an e-mail today saying that fieldday will be on the last Friday, so I will need to move our timeline to Thursday morning from 8:30-11:00.  Hopefully, that will give us enough time to get everyone through.  The Awards Program is in the afternnon.

If you are going to St. Louis and have a background check, would you mind letting me know?  I have a couple of students who I am needing to group with someone who has the background check because of the new ruling.  (You will have final say if you are okay with adding any student to your group.)

Friday, April 26, 2013

ISTEP MATH MONDAY

Please get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and come ready to show-off all you've mastered for our first ISTEP math test.  We will be taking the test at 11:45.  Tomorrow will be part 2 of the ISTEP math.  I can't brag enough on how well ixl.com can help your child to master difficult skills.  If at all possible, review as much as you can over the weekend for any weak areas you find.  You will be earning overtime bucks for working on the weekend if you bring in a paper signed by your trustworthy parents showing what NEW skills were conquered over the weekend.

Monday Morning Math Applied Skills Test

I hope some of you find the ixl.com to be helpful in reviewing math skills.  I had hoped everyone would "conquer" several before Monday, but time is just too short.  One area we were reviewing was the W's that included converting different measurements.  If you have time, you might check out the site to see what you think.  I am rewarding those with notes from home saying the area and the score your child achieved.  (example  W-4  75 points.)  They do need to reach 75 before stopping to win rewards.  Please try to practice those areas that need the most work.

Have a great weekend.  See you a week from today at the carnival.

Had a great group of kids staying for tutoring tonight.  We worked on measuring by inches and centimeters (tasty pretzels in the process..), finding median, mode, and mean, and classifying triangles.  We'll be splitting our time with reading/language arts as well.

We Enjoyed a Great Visit with Our Chinese Guest Today

Ask your child about our great guest speaker today.  She was a great follow-up to our reading In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson!

Try to have paragraph comparing strengths and weaknesses of British Redcoats and Patriots finished tomorrow.  If lab is free, we will type on Word.  Remember any extra practice your child can have to practice typing for our online ISTEP test would be helpful.

Lincoln crossword and lesson 6 questions are also due tomorrow.

please look at math spiral homework tonight.  We are practicing elapsed time on the back with the clocks.  We are seeing how much time elapsed between the first clock and the second.  Then, do the same with the second and third clock, etc...
We also worked on surface area in class today.  There are great online resources to practice these complex skills, including youtube videos that demonstrate them.

Next Tuesday is our last Acuity Language Arts test to prepare for ISTEP.  I have been looking at our data to see what standards each student did not pass on Acuity B.  I'll compare that data to what we get on Tuesday.  We will be working very hard in the next 3 weeks to do as much one-on-one as possible specifically looking at those weak skills.  You can also go on acuityathome.com to look at your child's scores with their password.  There are several resources for them to practice at home as well.  (I haven't logged on using their passwords, so tell me if you try and it doesn't work for you.)

Congratulations to this week's royalty:  Queen Kendra, Prince Ethan, Duchess Kelsie

Just heard that our students will be taking their Applied Skills portion of ISTEP on the computer.  I hope all of our practice in the lab this year will help our kiddos feel comfortable during the test.  If you have a computer at home, it would be helpful to give your child some kind of writing prompt (for example it could be giving some evidence to support their description of the character they are reading about...)...maybe time them so that they get some practice in finishing in a limited time.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend, and we can all get our batteries recharged for Monday.

2 Hour Delay in the Morning

Tomorrow will be the president retakes if requested.  Prepare for Friday being the second test covering the second page.

Thursday everyone should have read at least for one hour since last Thursday.  Summary sentences for every 20-30 minutes.  Well-written sentences for high points in language.

tonight: math sheet and practice spelling test

    Friday, January 18, 2013

Special Offer:  if your child did poorly on their first president test, I am willing to give them a second test to redeem their grade.  In order to do that, parents will need to write me a note saying their child has studied and is now ready to take the test again.  This would need to be during recess time.

    Have a great weekend!

Reading Super Bowl:  composition books were checked today for the past week's reading.  Read at least one hour by next Thursday to get full reading points in Power School.  Write two-sentence summaries for every 20-30 minutes that you read.  These sentences will be graded and put under your language grade in Power School next Thursday also.  Book-It coupons will be sent home starting tomorrow for those students who are where they should be on the football field for each month's expected hour amount.  Please keep encouraging your child to get in the habit of reading for enjoyment.

We did math in class today and I think everyone had time to complete and check their paper.  If not, they can turn it in in the morning.  Don't forget that they can reach ixl.com at home to practice almost any skill we are working on at school.

    Thursday, January 10, 2013

Coming home tonight is our first week of Fab Four in math.  Each day I give the students four specific math skills as a quiz.  I bring them back to the table one-on-one to discuss any missed problems.  The next day I give them four more problems over the same specific skills.  We continue doing that from Thursday to Wednesday each week.  Hopefully, by the fifth day, the students have mastered that skill.  (Wednesday would be the last day on their sheet.)  I keep track of those students who missed three or more problems for each skill.  I also keep record of those who mastered it the last day.  I will be going back to those same skills for those needing more remediation.  Please look at your child's sheet to see where,if any, their weaknesses are.  Today we began a new set of skills including perimeter/area, adding unlike fractions, dividing (and knowing the divisibility rules), and finding the average.
They are also bringing home a practice 9A Saxon sheet.  Please look over this sheet as well before they take their test on like problems tomorrow with 9B.  Their sheets should be corrected.
I will be listing any papers in reading or social studies that I am still needing for this week on the board tomorrow.
Hope your child is enjoying our new book, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson.  You might ask them about the characters, setting, and the beginning plot.  Our writing each morning is also connected to the book.  We are working on a compare/contrast essay together.  We are looking at the differences between China in 1942 and the United States in 2013.  Each paragraph needs a contrast transition word from the sheet in their folder.  We will be working on it for a few more days before it is complete.
I am going to be talking to the kids tomorrow about a new system in reading homework.  I will be recording minutes on Tuesday and Friday.  Between those two times, everyone needs to have read for one hour each week minimum.  Our two sentence summaries will be used for our language writing grade.  Please help encourage your child to be consistent in their enjoyment reading time.

    Thankfully Thinking Thursday was Thrilling

(Besides a possible hyperbole, what is that title an example of....$$$$??....tell me in the morning. )

    Reports are going home tomorrow.
Homework tonight (besides reading for 20 minutes):  finish math sheet and social studies sheet

    Skills we're working on:
    •  kinds of sentences (we should be well past this, but still have too many that haven't mastered classifying sentences correctly.)
    • practiced using interjections
    • finished our Junie B. Jones packet (great book for figurative language)  will discuss theme and author's purpose, and point of view tomorrow
    • slavery in the colonies (quiz tomorrow - worksheet covers same material)
    • math reviewing equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents
    • math finding area of triangles
Took a math benchmark test to see who has mastered beginning of the year material.  I'll also be giving four review problems each day, Fab Four, to see what skills still need to be reviewed.  There will also be a sheet with a specific skill on one side and review questions on the back.
